DIY leather sleeves for jacket

Lucero Tapia, also known as Lucykiins, is a fun DIY blogger who shares videos on YouTube. We love her simple and easy do it yourself tutorial to create your own denim jacket with leather sleeves. First, she got things started by using a thrifted denim vest and supplied the leather material by using the sleeves from leather jacket. If you’d rather purchase your own leather material, that’s totally fine too! Other materials you’ll need include fabric scissors, yellow thread and sewing machine, and some pins.

  1. Start by taking your leather jacket and cut the sleeves about 1 inch from the seam.
  2. Pin the lining on the inside to keep both sides in place.
  3. Sew into place, and don’t worry about it being neat, this part won’t be seen.
  4. Take the sleeves and match the shoulder seam on the sleeve to the shoulder part of the vest. Also match the armhole part to the sleeve.
  5. Pin in place and work slowly to avoid causing any holes in the fabric.
  6. Sew into place using your sewing machine and cut any loose threads to avoid snagging. If it seems a little insecure, you can sew over one more time.

If you’d like to add other accents, like leather pockets, grab your leather fabric and cut a small rectangle. Measure the length and width of your front pocket, along with the length down the middle.

For example, her measurements were four inches. Then, draw a square on the fabric to the measurements using a wax pen and a ruler. Make sure to add at least half an inch seam allowance for the pocket.
Pin into place and then cut out the square. Now you’ll have two pieces of the leather fabric for your pocket. Remove the pins and then fold the pocket fabric in half.
Then cut a small diagonal angle to give the pocket the pointed look. Sew together with your sewing machine, and then cut off the bottom corners in order to give the pocket a nice shape.
Flip the pocket inside out and you’ll be ready to attach it to the jacket. Place it right over top the pocket onto the denim vest. Mark where it meets the denim pocket, and then make a small slit to allow the button to secure into place. Attach the button to the pocket and secure into place with more pins.

For the last step, sew it in place with your sewing machine. The finished product looks totally rad and it’s a great way to give your wardrobe an updated look. Freshen up your look for fall with a denim jacket with leather sleeves like Lucero.
